Liquid Culture Recipe
A liquid culture is a nutrient-rich liquid medium used to grow and propagate mushroom mycelium. This medium usually consists of water and a carbohydrate source, like light malt extract or other sugars, which provide essential nutrients for mycelial growth. Liquid cultures are used to produce a large quantity of viable mycelium, which can then be used to inoculate substrates for mushroom cultivation. Using liquid culture offers benefits like faster colonization times, higher yields, and easier storage. There are many recipes, but this one has shown the best results.
-
Add 600 milliliters tap water to a small pot.
-
Mix 1 gram (~1/2 teaspoon) of light malt extract into the pot of water and bring to a low boil. Stir the broth and remove from heat.
- Add liquid culture broth to a glass jar and secure the appropriate lid.
-
If you are using our Liquid Culture Lid, remove the red cap and cover the tip of the tube in aluminum foil.
-
Don't forget to add your stir bar.
-
-
Autoclave at 15 psi for 20-25 minutes.
-
Allow to cool to room temperature before inoculating.

This recipe makes enough liquid culture for a quart glass jar; for a pint jar, halve the recipe.
